This paper reflects my personal experience and thought on leadership and management skills role during the completion of our project. This reflection includes how I have developed my skills portfolio what are the strength and weakness to manage the range of activities during the project.

The reflection includes how I viewed my leadership and management skills to manage strategy, culture and change in order to ensure self-motivation and team writing during the project.

The evaluation of the personal strength and weakness of my leadership and management skills provide me opportunity to develop and improve my leadership and management skills to grow in future.

Leadership and Management

Northouse (2014) stated that leadership and management are an important for the success of the individual and organisation. Leadership is defined as a process in which individual influence another team member to achieve the objectives of the organisation (Avolio and Yammarino, 2013).

Moreover, leadership ensures the goal congruence as well as create the vision, provide support for the organisation strategy and act as mentor to develop the team strengths to move the company in the right direction. On the other hand, management involves controlling of resources and activities to support the people (DuBrin, 2015).

According to Smith et al (2012), leadership skills cannot be copied or developed through formula but is mixture experiences, qualities and knowledge developed over the time. The purpose of the leadership within in the project to manage the team and maintain the motivation into effective achieves the objectives. Individuals have unique strengths and talents which are used in the problematic scenario proposed by the projects to resolve number of challenges.

For our project, in order to explore the personality and quality we use the activity of ‘two truths and a lie’. This helped to understand the situation and individual to assess that he does not process the required skills to tackle the challenges. In such scenario, it teamwork and Leadership helps to accomplish the task.

Therefore, it is not just the leaders but the followers also make a contribution to the organisation. Therefore, during the project I realize the relationship between leaders and followers (Daly, Speedy and Jackson, 2015).

According to McMurray et al (2012), effective leaders consistently show the behaviour and attitude which influence and motivates others. Moreover, a leadership who does not have reflections cannot influence other and in the long-term it is characterized as personal incompetence leading to organisation failure.

According to Ward (2013), leadership is concerned as transactional event between the leader and follower rather traits and characteristic. Leader influence the people and it occurs in the group to achieve common goals. I have believed that leaders are able to see the future potential and lead the team and manage the processes to achieve the vision. During our project, we set a clear direction for the project.

Strategy is defined as course action to achieve specific objectives. Day (2014) discussed that effective project management I manage to clear defined the objectives of the project, outcomes and benefits expected from the project as well as defined milestones and timeline. Project involves number of different task and activities to be completed within defined resource.

Our team planned activity of ‘Tent building’. This helped us to understand and apply strategic planning was effective management through allocating the task and setting the priorities. The management of the resources and motivating the team was challenge. I believe the personal strength I process and team member observe that I effectively allocated the resources and negotiating the recourse and task allocation to keep all member motivated (Morey, Maybury and Thuraisingham, 2016).

Nevertheless, during strategic development stage the weakness I feel have lack of conflict management which has result in overlap and delay of task because of the team members had different perspectives on certain activities.

According to Mulki, Caemmerer and Heggde (2015) leadership is concerned with the power in order to influence the process. Therefore, leadership gives the power to influences others to change their belief, attitude and behaviours. I believe to effective complete the projects the power is important but it need to use in positive way  which keep the team members motivated rather they feel forced to achieve certain objectives. The different types of power individual can assert are referent power, expert power, legitimate power, reward power and coercive power.

To effective support, we planned activity of ‘reality check’ to identify the leadership and set behaviour goals. I believe effective project management help to exercise the expert power as a leader. The power helped to achieve and complete the task on time through effective planning (Lussier and Achua, 2015).

The expert power proved as strengthen which was strong factor for self-motivation as well. The activity helped to inform, direct, persuading as well as collaboration among the team based on the leadership efforts. I believe personal power could have resolved the issue in timely and set behaviour goals. Consequently, I believe developing knowledge and skills is important to exercise the personal power (Barnes et al., 2015).

According to Vaccaro et al (2012) the function of the leadership is to establish vision, present bigger picture as well as set the direction and strategy. I believe during our project, clear vision in terms of completion of project was set as well as effective project management helped to set the direction for the task. Nevertheless, one the direction is set the value of the management skills could not be value less as management skills help to set the timetables and resource allocation for the activities.

Leadership and management skills in conjunction helped to manage the change in the internal and external context associated with the project. For effective develop the team members skills, we planned activity called ‘coaching as conversation’ Leadership and management goes hand in hand as leadership helps to align the people the people through communicating goals, building motivation and commitment. The activity helped to counsel, mentoring and instructing the team members (Griffin, 2013).

I consider the strength of the team during the project was strong commitment to achieve the common goals and every member was committed to achieve the goals though timely completion the project. Nevertheless, aligning people is one task but organizing is also important of the management of the resources (Luis, 2010).

According to Schein (2006) Culture is powerful force which affects the individual and organisation and shapes the things according. Moreover, culture are the norms and values and its set the norms for practice. For example, how certain task will be achieved as well as what is acceptable and how followers attention will be achieved by the leaders. Nevertheless, it can be argue that leaders manage, create and change the culture.

In order to build task culture in our team we planned activity called ‘Leadership swaps’. This helped to develop understanding, brattling negativity as motivation for the team members. It is talent and ability of the leader to work and integrate different team members in order to promote goal congruence (Bassa and Avolio, 2015).

Leadership can develop affect the culture and i.e. team member’s experiencing the leadership role helped to build strong task culture. This defines the culture formation of group and role of the leader was setting priorities and align resources as well as people (Baumgartner, 2015).

According to Lumby, Crow and Pashiardis (2009) another important element in the cultural formation is belief and value of the organisation. The university environment and support helped to develop the norms for our group. The fundamental requirement was skills and abilities to effective manage and lead the resources. The skilled member has played role to coordinate the different elements of the project and leader had expert power in our group. Nevertheless, leaders play an important in culture formulation.

The first activity to clearly marked and understand the culture was ‘Zoom’. Team used picture puzzle and examine how team member gave input to the task. I believe the strength I had we developed a task culture in our group which helped us to quickly complete the task. Leadership and culture are similar things as leader pioneers first make culture when they make groups and associations.

Chen and Silverthorne (2015) discussed that style of the leadership have important implication on the culture of an organisation. For example, autocratic leader is likely to dictate the team member rather empowering and buying-in the employees.

In order to ensure that each member of the team is onboard we planned the activity of ‘egg drop game’. Transformational leadership involve visioning, supporting as well appreciating the effort put by each member of the team. The focus achieved through activity and crisis management as well as leading the team and organisation in the right direction is important aspect of the leadership. Leaders develop the culture of an organisation which helps them (Mainemelis, Kark and Epitropaki, 2015).

Culture subsist they focus the criteria for authority and consequently outline out who will or won’t be a leader. The skills and abilities of the managers have the capacity to see the useful and broken components of the current culture and social progression and change in such a route, to the point that the gathering can get and manage change. Power is initially the wellspring of the convictions and qualities that get a gathering moving in managing team issues and maintain motivation. Leadership plays an integral role to manage the multicultural team to minimise the conflict in the team as well as have effective communication (Donate and Pablo, 2015).

Tuckman’s the stage of team building involved in team building, i.e. forming, storming, norming and performing. Moreover, it has been witness that small groups has been a lot more effectiveness than rigid organization structures. Leadership and management skills in conjunction helped to manage the change in the internal and external context associated with the project (Lussier and Achua, 2015).

Rickards and Clark (2016) Leader has important role to develop an effective team to achieve common objective and vision. Team member works together through pooling resources and creating a vision to move towards the common goal. Leader role in team building is important to ensure the performance of the team, better communication and coordination as well as increase the corporation among the team members. In order to ensure the team deliver the maximum output and results an activity of ‘classification game’ was planned.

A team involves two or more individuals who are equally responsible to achieve the defined objectives. All team members are equally responsible to accomplish the mission and strengthen performance through pooling their skills and knowledge. The responsibility is team duty to choices and standard of execution. All team members had self-sufficiency to settle on choices on the individual level to proceed with the advancement to achieve the common vision (Halverson and Tirmizi, 2015).

Dionne et al (2014) discussed that leader ensure that the team members does not have conflict among them as well as able to resolve the problem the among the team members. The effective team have transformational leader which provide support, motivation as well as encouragement for the each member of the team. In a complex environment, companies are utilizing a team way to deal with bring an assorted arrangement of abilities and viewpoints into play.

In order to determine the ability of each individual in the team as well as analyse the effective of the leadership, we planned an activity of ‘Leadership Dance card’. This helped to talk about each other as well as share best practices for leadership. A successful utilization of teams frequently draws upon an innovative methodology of uniting authorities who join their endeavours and create intra-team cooperative energies to meet the difficulties of their regularly complex hierarchical environment (Zaccaro and Klimoski, 2015).

Moreover, leadership is another important characteristic for the effective performance of the team (Wendta, Euwemab and Emmerik, 2014).

According to Zhang, Cao and Tjosvold (2011), transformational leadership have important role in terms of team development as well as relationship among the team member. The leader is views as problem solver as well as responsible to diagnose the problem which hinder the performance of the team. Moreover, leader develops solution and implements it to overcome these problems.

In order to exercise transformational leadership, ‘werewolf activity’ was used as it helps to achieve better power of persuasion. The success of our project team was based effective transformational relationship through providing clear vision and achieves goodness for the all member of the team. Each team member had responsibility, reasonableness and correspondence issues between our two-team members (Lumby, Crow and Pashiardis, 2016).

The strength of leadership in success of the team was information sharing as well as problem solving. The transformational leadership helps to achieve the cognitive process of the team, motivation and coordination among the team members (Kouzes and Posner, 2015).

In today’s modern world, change is inevitable and success is achieved through effective change management. The change management involves a range of the cultural barrier which is individualism, scenery and silence. Therefore, it is the role of leader to effectively over the challenges associated with the project. The leadership needs to accomplish parity through a transaction with different partners. The leadership brings change will help to the break the boundary and foster the way of life of aggregate critical thinking (Todnem By, 2005).

In order to examine to cope the changing scenario, our group planned activity of ‘survival scenarios’ in which different alternatives were examined. Leadership helps to foster the relationship which helps create trustworthiness and respect member of the team. The fundamental is that vision and team working are aligned and working towards the achievement of the common goals (Ahn, Adamson and Dornbusch, 2014).

To keep up our confidence level and participation among members our team came to an agreement and develop norms and culture of mutual problem solving. The objectives were interlinked so that every individual share experiences and skills and aptitudes for the advantage of different individuals (Hamel, 2015).

Todnem (2015) debated that the leader role is to gain acceptance during the change process and transformational leadership plays an important to identify, evaluate and implement the solution for the problem. The leadership must create vision in order to motivate other as well as self-motivation. Autonomy and involving people in identifying and problem solving is important to come to an agreement and change acceptance for the all stakeholders.

The weakness in leadership identified during the change management stage was believe that other have understood the problem as well as team member have clearly understood the problem. The lesson learnt during the change management that communication should be clear, timely as well as transformation to motivate team members (Daly, Speedy and Jackson, 2015).

Motivation is defined as in which individual and team members are committed to achieve the common goals. Maslow hierarchy of need is best tool to evaluate the motivation of the individual and effective leadership role to identify and meet the expectation of the team members (Griffin, 2015).

The strength of the project was all members of the team have strong motivation based on the esteem need. The transformational leadership style helped to create sense of acceptance and motivation for all members of the team. The esteem need of the team member was fulfilled through recognition, appreciation, competence as well as confidence for the contribution in the project achievement. Motivation is important and to ensure each member remains on board. This ensures the members of the team are satisfied (Zaccaro and Klimoski, 2016).

Moreover, the benefit attached in terms of completion of the project and long-term objective for the degree which would help to achieve the vision for the project. In order to keep the motivation, communication and connectivity high in our team, we planned the game of ‘Get a clue with shoe’. This helped to develop bound among each other have time together. The role of the leadership is to build the team, listen to the team members and provide support to the team members (Bassa and Avolio, 2015).

It is important that leader deploy the right strategy at the right time to overcome the problem and keep the team member motivated. For example, if leader fails to account the problem of the group members then it will lead to group conflict and performance of the team might effect. The activity helps to understand and connect all members together and work as team (Donate and Pablo, 2015).

Leadership and management have an important role to achieve the objectives of the individual and team. Lack of leadership and management skills will hinder the achievement of the goal. The role of leadership is to create vision and alignment of the resources in order to complete the project. Nevertheless, management provides the structure and processes to achieve the objectives. Leadership has important role in term of strategic planning and team management.

Leadership needs to manage the change in order to ensure the project and activities are completed on time. Strong leadership helps to develop culture and transformational style helps to integrate the team members and achieve the goal congruence. In the evaluation of my skills and abilities, I have discovered my strengths which involve project management and change management skills.

Moreover, strong management skills such for planning and controlling the resources have proved successful. Nevertheless, the weakness highlighted is autocratic leadership style which result in conflict in a certain situation. Moreover, the skills development areas include conflict management and transformation leadership style is important (Ahn, Adamson and Dornbusch, 2016).

At last, not least, the fundamental problem highlighted is failure to develop a sense that all team members have understood the requirement and there is agreement among all stakeholders.
